iPhone Running Slow? Speed It up

A slow iPhone can usually be fixed without replacing it. Restart it, clear out storage, limit background refresh and location tracking, reduce motion effects and keep iOS updated. If nothing works, check battery health or, as a last resort, back up and factory reset.

Let’s face it, iPhones are amazing devices. But even the sleekest, most powerful iPhone can succumb to the dreaded slowdown. Apps take forever to load, scrolling feels sluggish, and pretty soon simple tasks become frustrating ordeals. If your iPhone has gone from speedy sidekick to sluggish snail, don’t despair! Here are some easy tips to get it back in tip-top shape.

Start With the Simple Fixes

This might seem like a no-brainer, but how long has it been since you turned your device off? Just like us, iPhones need the occasional power nap. Restarting your phone clears temporary files, closes lingering apps and frees up memory, so it’s a quick and easy way to give it a refresh.

Next, clear out the digital clutter. Our iPhones can become digital packrats, hoarding photos, videos and apps we no longer use, and all that clutter can slow things down. Review your photo and video library and delete blurry shots, duplicates and anything you no longer need. Do you really need all those selfies? Cloud storage services like iCloud Photos or OneDrive can store your memories without clogging up your device, and many will upload new photos automatically.

Then be honest about how many apps you actually use each day. Delete the ones you haven’t touched in months to free up space, reduce background activity and improve battery life. If you’d rather keep an app’s data, the Offload Unused Apps feature (iOS 11 and later) deletes the app but keeps its data, so you can simply download it again later without losing anything. Finally, check your podcasts. Many download to your device without you realising, and if you listen to several shows they can fill your storage fast, so remove any downloads you don’t need.

Rein In Background Activity

Some of the biggest slowdowns come from what your iPhone does when you’re not using it. Background App Refresh lets apps fetch new content even when they’re closed. That’s handy for staying up to date, but it can also drain your battery and slow your phone, so turn it off for apps that don’t need to refresh constantly. In the same way, not every app needs to know where you are. Many track your location even when you’re not using them, which affects both battery life and performance, so review your Location Services settings and restrict access for apps that don’t need it.

You can also turn off Apple’s motion effects, such as app parallax and zoom animations. They can be beautiful, but they’re resource-intensive, and switching them off frees up processing power and makes your iPhone feel snappier.

Keep Everything Up to Date

App and iOS updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes, so make sure you’re running the latest versions for the best performance and security. Automatic updates are convenient, but they can kick in at inconvenient times and slow your phone down. Consider turning off automatic downloads and updating manually when you have time and a good Wi-Fi connection. Set a recurring reminder in your calendar so you don’t forget, as these updates matter for security.

If your phone is still sluggish, check your battery health under Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If maximum capacity has dropped below 80%, your iPhone may be throttling performance to conserve battery life, and a replacement battery could make a big difference. As a last resort, a factory reset can clear out stubborn bugs by returning your iPhone to its original settings. Be careful with this nuclear option, though. Back up your iPhone first and sign out of iCloud so you don’t lose any important data.

A little maintenance goes a long way in keeping your iPhone happy and fast.
